HALIFAX – A woman convicted of murdering a young Inuit university student says she isn’t looking for a new trial, only a “change of charges.”
Victoria Henneberry says she panicked when she pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Loretta Saunders, whose body was found on the side of a New Brunswick highway in February 2014.
Henneberry is representing herself in the appeal of that conviction.
She started the case yesterday by asking for a delay, saying she was not emotionally or mentally prepared.
Henneberry claims she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
She called three witnesses _ a psychiatrist, police officer and her former lawyer _ and quizzed them about the effects of P-T-S-D.
The judge in the Appeal Court of Nova Scotia ordered her to proceed.
Justice Duncan Beveridge also told her in court that if she won her appeal, the court would likely have to order a new trial.
Henneberry and Blake Leggette, her boyfriend, pleaded guilty as their murder trial was starting on April 22nd, 2015.
She is scheduled to continue her arguments today.
